Wednesday wisdom: Believe in me

Day 3 of Yoga Journal’s 21-day yoga challenge, and I’m really loving the ‘social’ aspect of it. I’m finding that connecting and sharing my experiences with others is really keeping me motivated to stay with my practice every day!

Check out this article (via Tiny Buddha) about the importance of believing in ourselves and in each other. I think it speaks very well to the way I’m feeling so far into this new year’s challenge.

How are you doing with your resolutions? What’s keeping you motivated?

Let the challenge begin!

Today is the first day of Yoga Journal’s 21-day yoga challenge. The challenge includes a daily yoga practice, 15 minutes of meditation each day, and at least one vegetarian meal a day.

The video above is an ‘intermediate’ practice, but you can choose a level when you sign up for the challenge. I love that I can track my progress on Social Workout and share it with yoga buddies. I think it’s a great way to stay motivated!

Yoga this week!!

My little man has officially started school, so I’m switching my weekly class to Monday at 10am- beginning tomorrow! I’m not sure I’ll remember how to teach without a wild little animal running in and out of the class, but let’s just see how it goes… 😉

Hope to see you there!

Saucha = Purity

As 2012 has begun, I’ve been making an effort to re-commit to my observance of Ahimsa. For several days, though, I have been feeling much more connected to a niyama– Saucha. Saucha is usually translated as “purity.”

I was reading through an article at the beginning of this week that stated that the New Year is a time for ‘purification rituals.’ I’m not sure how broadly applicable that is, but I love the idea of it anyway. I know, for me, it rings true. Perhaps if the holidays are a time of excess, the New Year is a time to re-balance, purify and simplify. The New Year is like pulling out a fresh, clean sheet of paper on which each of us will write the “2012” chapter of our lives.

There are so many convergences happening right now that I’ve been drawn to an intensified observance of Saucha in the past few days. Firstly, we are still in this window of pure potentiality, known as the window of direct creation. This will continue until 1.23.

Also, on Monday 1.9, the 40-day Global Sadhana honoring the Divine Feminine will be drawing to a close, and I will be beginning a 21-day yoga challenge– transitioning back into a more rigorous asana practice again.

And let’s not forget that the first full moon of 2012 will be on Monday, as well. I usually give a little shout-out to the full moon with some type of clearing or purification practice- I sage, I re-charge my crystals, I go to a full moon sound healing ceremony with crystal bowls from time to time.

With all of these factors combining to produce such powerful energy, I’ve been prioritizing clearing, cleansing, letting go- putting down any excess baggage that no longer serves me. My house is getting the Saucha treatment currently. I’m finally purging all of the excess that came here when we moved in last year. Let me tell you… it feels great. I’ve been re-organizing and re-arranging, practicing a little Feng Shui to remove any blockages and help the energy (Chi) flow more freely. I feel better already.

As I was reflecting on the changes I’m making and experiencing, I realized that details are awesome and wonderful. But it is the “purification rituals” themselves that hold the most power. No matter what form or aspect the “purification” takes, the results are the same in some way- like saying ‘I love you‘ in 15 different languages. If the intention is pure and true, it will transport you to the same place in the end.

If you haven’t tried any “purification rituals” recently (whatever that means to you), maybe give it a try and see if you experience the same thing. Has anyone else been focusing on clearing and cleansing this New Year? If so, whatcha doin’?

Window of direct creation

My beautiful friend (and Reiki Angel), Lotus Love made me aware of this when I saw her recently. Currently, all of the planets in our solar system are in direct motion– from 12/26/11 until 1/23/12. It’s a rare occurence, and Lotus has made a video that spells it out beautifully… so I’ll let her do the talking.

Check out her video to learn more about the unique potential of this time. ♥

Holiday presence

Yep- things are definitely under way now. Less than a week until Hanukkah and the Winter Solstice, and barely a week until ’twill be the night before Christmas.

So, tell me, my friends… how’s it going? Are you experiencing the holidays or experiencing a holidaze? Personally, it was holidays, then Holly-days, and now… Holly-daze??

That’s why I am even more grateful for this great reminder about staying in the moment during the holidays- though these suggestions are invaluable for being present at any moment (holidays or no). Check out Panache Desai’s Six Ways to Be Present During the Holidays.

Karma Yoga: Yoga off the mat

In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna states that the most important lesson his disciple, Arjuna, can learn is to perform his duties with devotion and without attachment to the fruits of his actions- i.e., without an eye on rewards for what he does.

The yogic path has several branches. While Hatha Yoga (the yoga of physical postures) is the most well known in the Western world, “doing yoga” can actually mean many things. Karma Yoga is the yoga of selfless service- it calls upon the yoga practitioner to serve without seeking a reward. Gandhi was a model Karma yogi.

It is often said that this time of year is a time for giving. One cannot turn on a tv or walk down the street or do anything really without being bombarded with suggestions for how and what to ‘give’ this holiday season. So, here‘s another one- giving time and service through Karma Yoga. Take your yoga off the mat and into the world this holiday season!
