Let the challenge begin!

Today is the first day of Yoga Journal’s 21-day yoga challenge. The challenge includes a daily yoga practice, 15 minutes of meditation each day, and at least one vegetarian meal a day.

The video above is an ‘intermediate’ practice, but you can choose a level when you sign up for the challenge. I love that I can track my progress on Social Workout and share it with yoga buddies. I think it’s a great way to stay motivated!

Weekly wisdom from Doreen Virtue

Happy Monday… it’s Doreen and the “nature Angels”- the fairies. I totally can’t believe how right on she is (ok, yes I can). I’m using the power of the full moon to clear, cleanse, and let go. For days, I’ve been purging my house, my body, my life of all that no longer serves me. Powerful winds are at my back and now is the time. Thanks, Doreen for reminding me of it again.

How about you? Does Doreen’s reading ring true this week?

Saucha = Purity

As 2012 has begun, I’ve been making an effort to re-commit to my observance of Ahimsa. For several days, though, I have been feeling much more connected to a niyama– Saucha. Saucha is usually translated as “purity.”

I was reading through an article at the beginning of this week that stated that the New Year is a time for ‘purification rituals.’ I’m not sure how broadly applicable that is, but I love the idea of it anyway. I know, for me, it rings true. Perhaps if the holidays are a time of excess, the New Year is a time to re-balance, purify and simplify. The New Year is like pulling out a fresh, clean sheet of paper on which each of us will write the “2012” chapter of our lives.

There are so many convergences happening right now that I’ve been drawn to an intensified observance of Saucha in the past few days. Firstly, we are still in this window of pure potentiality, known as the window of direct creation. This will continue until 1.23.

Also, on Monday 1.9, the 40-day Global Sadhana honoring the Divine Feminine will be drawing to a close, and I will be beginning a 21-day yoga challenge– transitioning back into a more rigorous asana practice again.

And let’s not forget that the first full moon of 2012 will be on Monday, as well. I usually give a little shout-out to the full moon with some type of clearing or purification practice- I sage, I re-charge my crystals, I go to a full moon sound healing ceremony with crystal bowls from time to time.

With all of these factors combining to produce such powerful energy, I’ve been prioritizing clearing, cleansing, letting go- putting down any excess baggage that no longer serves me. My house is getting the Saucha treatment currently. I’m finally purging all of the excess that came here when we moved in last year. Let me tell you… it feels great. I’ve been re-organizing and re-arranging, practicing a little Feng Shui to remove any blockages and help the energy (Chi) flow more freely. I feel better already.

As I was reflecting on the changes I’m making and experiencing, I realized that details are awesome and wonderful. But it is the “purification rituals” themselves that hold the most power. No matter what form or aspect the “purification” takes, the results are the same in some way- like saying ‘I love you‘ in 15 different languages. If the intention is pure and true, it will transport you to the same place in the end.

If you haven’t tried any “purification rituals” recently (whatever that means to you), maybe give it a try and see if you experience the same thing. Has anyone else been focusing on clearing and cleansing this New Year? If so, whatcha doin’?

Ahims-huh??

I was just thinking about ways to regain my focus in my observance of Ahimsa when I came across this video of the Dalai Lama at the presentation to His Holiness of the Mahatma Gandhi International Award for Reconciliation and Peace during the Kalachakara for World Peace in Bodh Gaya, India, on January 4, 2012.

Takin’ notes. ♥

What’s Reiki??

I posted a video recently from my friend, Lotus Love. She’s a Reiki practioner and healer. After I posted it (and also after having a Reiki session with her), quite a few people have asked me ‘what exactly is Reiki?’

The video above covers it quite nicely. Basically, it’s a holistic healing modality in which a Reiki practioner acts as a conduit of natural healing vibrations. This article (via Green Lotus) also offers useful information about Reiki, including findings from a study of Reiki programs in hospitals, clinics, and hospice facilities throughout the US.

One of my intentions for this year is to learn to practice Reiki, so look out for more info on Reiki as we roll into 2012!
