Inhale from the tips of your toes

WARNING: The video may not be for you if you are squeamish. Personally, I find information about human anatomy to be a great way to deepen my practice, but I know it’s not for everyone. So, that being said…

Conscious breathing is the foundation of my yoga- the yoga I practice, the yoga I teach, the yoga I carry with me throughout my day. Pause right now and bring your attention fully to your breathing for 5 slow, deep breaths.

How did that feel? Did anything open up that seemed stuck before? I don’t find many situations that can’t be elevated by taking a deep, conscious breath before you step into them.

That is most likely why I love this video so much. It is one of the lessons from my teacher training that has stayed most alive for me- transforming my body and breathing awareness in such powerful ways.

Often in my classes, we take a good, long pause when we first come to stand in tadasana. I like to take my time to build the pose from the ground up, beginning with the soles of the feet connecting with the earth.

I was teaching a new student last week. She’s relatively new to yoga, but she is already great at staying present in her breathing. In fact, she asked me several times about ways to connect more deeply with her breathing. I had to become that much more present and aware in my practice to answer her.

One of those moments was when she asked me about breathing in tadasana. The ‘deep front line’ guy immediately popped into my head. As I was finishing my teacher training last year, I was simultaneously training for my first 5K. During my training for the race, every run became a kind of meditation on tadasana.

I’m not so young and springy as I used to be. In order to keep things from creaking and popping when I ran, I tried to stay fully in my body as I took each stride. I took the lessons I had learned during ‘quiet time’ in tadasana and hit the road with them. I felt better acquainted with every bone in my foot. I had a better understanding of the muscles in my leg. I remembered the ‘deep front line’ guy and took each inhale from the soles of my feet to the tip of my tongue- drawing strength and power up from the ground below. Just like I had done in tadasana.

Try it after you watch this clip. Stand up straight and tall in tadasana (barefoot is best). After you feel settled into the pose, take a few deep, conscious breaths- feeling as if you are drawing each breath up through the soles of your feet.

Weekly wisdom from Doreen Virtue

Last week’s oracle card reading wrapped up with the suggestion to spend time outdoors over the weekend. I happened to take that advice, packing up the fam and heading out to Joshua Tree. It was a great trip for many reasons (I got to see Sean Johnson and the Wild Lotus Band, CC White, Arjun Baba, and Krishna Das!!!), but one of the things that made it the most special for me was being in the desert landscape. I love going to places where the natural environment is different than the one I see in my day-to-day. It gives me a new perspective on things.

So, I guess I don’t have to tell you that I’m stoked that Doreen is using her ‘Healing with the Fairies’ oracle card deck this week. The fairies are nature angels. They back up Mother Earth and work to keep her balanced. Doreen states in the beginning of her reading that the Healing Fairies deck works well for anyone who has environmental issues on the brain.

I also love that the reading for the weekend brings up detoxing and clearing. We are rapidly coming upon the change of the seasons again. I often like to observe solstices and equinoxes with some type of cleanse or detox- whether it be in my diet, my thoughts, my habits, my schedule. Whatever form it might take, I love to ride the energetic wave of ‘change’ that surges around solstices and equinoxes.

I’ll have more to share about that as we roll up to the autumnal equinox, but I love that it came up already. A great reminder and great motivation.

Do you observe the changing of the seasons in some way? What will you be doing to get ready for fall?

Weekly wisdom from Doreen Virtue

Here you go, boo boos… Angels!

For those among you who feel now is a time for rest (healing/nurturing/transition/transformation, etc.), Doreen has brought with her the wisdom of Archangel Michael. He is a protector. He can shelter you from the storm.

Spoiler alert: My favorite part is when she says that the angels acknowledge the work I’ve been doing to open my heart.

“Aww- thanks, angels. Shucks, little me?” (Cut to me working and praying and practicing and singing like I’m training for the Olympics. Like, “Open my heart. Please, help me open my heart.” I backbended like Rocky today.)

Anyway, your angels love you. And Kamelien does, too!

It’s in the stars

The unofficial ‘end of summer’ is behind us now. All of a sudden, we’re 4 days into September even though I barely noticed its beginning amid all of the holiday weekend revelry. My family and I marked the holiday by running in a 5K race at Disneyland on Saturday, which was awesome. It was a great start to a fun weekend.

So, now it’s the fourth and your September horoscope is here. Technically, it was there all along- but I wasn’t. I was partying. With Mickey Mouse.

Now that we have that straigtened out, we can look ahead to what’s in the stars for September. We were graced with the rare occasion of a blue moon last month. According to Susan Miller, the full moon on September 29 will be a memorable one as well- and maybe not for the best reasons.

Check out what she has to say about your September horoscope (via AstrologyZone).

Weekly wisdom from Doreen Virtue

Happy Tuesday, folks!

I’m getting at’cha a day late this week since yesterday was my love’s birthday, and I set the whole day aside for him. Ahh… L O V E.

To my great pleasure, I see that Doreen has brought the Magical Unicorns with her this week. Following the trend of the readings for the past few weeks, this week’s spread encourages taking some quiet time this week (she uses the word ‘retreat’) for reflection, healing, and self-care again.

Also, she developed the Magical Unicorns deck to be used by children and to speak to the inner child within each of us. Therefore, this week’s reading carries an undercurrent of spending time with and caring for your inner child.

So that’s it for August, my friends, and fall will be here before we know it. Time for taking stock and making necessary changes once again. I think that this week’s reading suggests that it’s not too early for that work to begin.

Since I will not be teaching this week or next week, I’ll be taking it easy and spending time with my boys as summer wraps up.

Wishing you all the best and sending positive thoughts for any healing or transformation you may be working on right now.
