Spring springs tonight!

The Vernal Equinox is tonight at 10:14pm PST!

Around the world, people will be celebrating this event according to their unique cultural and spiritual traditions. At my house, we’re having a Peeps and Pysanky party! I prepared the dyes this morning and put the eggs out so they will be the right temperature when it’s time to get our pysanky party on. My great-grandma was a real master at making Ukrainian Easter eggs, and it was a yearly tradition in my home growing up. I’m like an excited little kid to share it with my family.

As I mentioned recently, eggs are a symbol associated with the Teutonic goddess Ostara and decorating eggs in her honor on the Vernal Equinox (Ostara Sabbat) is an old tradition.

I’m lucky to be living in a time zone where staying up to burn my “clean slate” list won’t push me too far past my bedtime.

I love this season! Bring it on!!

Happy, blessed Spring to everyone! May the seeds you plant grow and flourish… ♥

Weekly wisdom from Doreen Virtue

This week, Doreen is working with the Magical Unicorns deck. She points out that she created this deck specifically to be child-friendly… for children of all ages. Fun! I may have to get some. Anything with unicorns is a win with me. Plus, I could use a child-friendly deck so that ‘that little boy’ has a place to focus his curious paws 😉

Anyway… Doreen says that this will be a week of great growth and change. The timing is perfect with the equinox happening overnight tonight. Sounds like it may be a week of spring cleaning on many levels. Remember- opening, allowing, and working with the flow works better than resisting and struggling. Let go and ride the wave!

And for the children, inner children, those with children, those inspired by the unicorns, etc., tonight’s the night to test the Vernal Equinox egg balancing myth. Does it work for you?

Daily reminder

“The only reason we don’t open our hearts and minds to other people is that they trigger confusion in us that we don’t feel brave enough or sane enough to deal with. To the degree that we look clearly and compassionately at ourselves, we feel confident and fearless about looking into someone else’s eyes.”

Hurray! It’s the first week of spring!

I have 2 classes on the schedule this week- my regular class on Monday at 10am and a special ‘Yoga Basics’ class on Saturday at 10am. Both of these classes will be held outdoors, and the monsoons are forecasted to arrive this week… so please check back often for any schedule changes.

Happy spring, everyone!

UPDATE: Class on Monday, March 19 is cancelled with a possible reschedule on Wednesday, March 21. Stay tuned…

Ostara approaches

Sooo… you may (or may not) have noticed by now that I observe holidays, holy days, holly days, festivals, and celebrations from diverse cultures and religions. I don’t discriminate. I’m an equal opportunity observer… where I find meaning and power, I embrace it.

Currently, one of my very favorite observances is fast approaching. On Monday, March 19th at 10:14pm PST, it will be the Vernal Equinox. This is the time when the dark and the light of the day are in perfect balance before the light takes the lead. It is a time when masculine and feminine energies are in balance. It is a wonderful time to begin new projects, sowing the seeds that will flourish throughout the rest of the year. We can benefit greatly by working with the energies of this time in our efforts to revitalize and grow.

Many (myself included) observe the Vernal Equinox as a celebration of the goddess Ostara- Ostara Sabbat.

Ostara/Eostre is the Teutonic goddess of fertility. She is associated with the rabbit (a symbol of fertility) and the egg (a symbol of creation and fertility). Perhaps this is sounding a little familiar now… Easter? Easter bunny? Easter eggs? The colors associated with Ostara are pastel yellow, pink, and green- soft tones that reflect the softness and newness of the spring.

So, this Ostara business isn’t so unfamiliar after all. The intentions of its rituals and observances shouldn’t be so foreign either. ‘Spring cleaning’ is a cliche, right? Time for moving out the excess and heaviness of winter so that new energy may enter.

One practice that I have observed every spring since I was living in Sedona is known as “wiping your slate clean.” Basically, it entails making a list of the offenses you have committed in the previous year. Make this list a week prior to the Equinox- write down all of your negative acts to family and friends, and then make an effort to right these wrongs before the Equinox. On the day of the Equinox, gather your list of wrongs and how you have attempted to right them… and then burn it. Clean slate!

How about you? What will you be doing to celebrate the arrival of spring?

Building your home practice

I recently had a student ask me to recommend some yoga DVDs so that she could strengthen her practice- even if she couldn’t make it to a class. I definitely have a few well-worn favorites that I’ve used over and over since my son was born. It was a great way to practice faithfully without having to worry about child care. My son has even taken somewhat of an interest in yoga from watching me on my mat his whole life.

My absolute favorite DVDs Gentle Energy Yoga with Kim McDermott, Vols. 1 &2 blend yoga with energy work and guided meditation. Kim was an instructor at the spa where I worked in Sedona. She recommended these DVDs as being gentle enough for any body (I was pregnant at the time), and I still love them even now. They just leave me feeling great.

Another of my favorites is Detox and Destress with Kundalini Yoga with Maya Fiennes (a preview is above). It is also a challenging and rejuvenating practice, though you remain seated throughout.

Check out these other recommendations as well as further insight as to why yoga DVDs can benefit any yoga practitioner.

Namaste!

Daily reminder

“At one pole of my existance, I am one with the stones and the tree branches. Thus I must submit to the yoke of the Universal law.

It is this, in the end, that is the very basis of my life. And that force comes from that which is closely bound up in the unity of the world, which is in full communication with all things.

But at the other pole, I am distinct fromm all of the rest. Here, I have broken the barriers of equality and I find myself alone, as an individual. I am absolutely unique. I am I. I am incomparable. The whole mass of the Universe cannot crush this individuality that is mine. I maintain it despite the formidable gravitation of all that exists.

It is small in appearance, but great in reality.”

Weekly wisdom from Doreen Virtue

Ooooooh… the first card is a unicorn with a rainbow. I’m already in love. It was a beautiful morning for yoga this morning. We had a great class in my secret fairy garden (yard). The blue skies, sunshine, and little birds had me kicking up my heels (on the inside) and playing with my inner child. Hummingbirds bring that out in me.

See what Doreen and the fairies have to say about the rest of the week above. And don’t forget to drink plenty of water 😉
