So(ul) much fun

The current 40-day Global Sadhana began on Mother’s Day- Elevating Ourselves, Blessing Our Children. I was pretty much knocked out of the box with sickness over the weekend. I wasn’t quite myself.

But now that I’m patched back together and recuperated, I’ve really begun to enjoy this sadhana more than any of the others I’ve done. Of course, this may have more than a little to do with the fact that little man gets to join in, too.

The children’s celestial communication is my absolute favorite part of this sadhana. Max nearly has it down now, and it’s probably the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. I’ll try to make a video at some point… photographing him is somewhat like trying to get a shot of a yeti, though.

Wish me luck! And try this celestial communication with any little munchkins in your life. I hope they enjoy as much as my little buddy does!

The next Global Sadhana!

The next Global Sadhana begins this Sunday! This time, we will be “Elevating Ourselves, Blessing Our Children.” It is not only for parents and caretakers of children, but anyone who is interested in the upliftment of children worldwide.

The sadhana includes a pranayama exercise, as well as a recitation. Also, check out this video of what Snatam calls “celestial communication” for children. I love it already! I can’t wait to show it to my little man. He loves learning new songs.

I’m very excited about joining this global community to aid children and their caretakers. And it begins on Mother’s Day… such a great gift ♥

Global sadhana has begun

It’s day 3 of the 40-day global sadhana to release fear and become a conscious leader. This global sadhana challenges the participants with a 31-minute daily meditation (demonstrated above). It’s quite intense. Like many kriyas, it requires the practioner to dig deep and push beyond any mental blockages.

Just. Keep. On.

(Snatam Kaur’s version of Aadays Tisay Aadays is available on Spotify.)

Daily reminder

“Sadhana: Trauma or mistreatment by parents or caretakers can be healed or altered through what is known in Sanskrit as sadhana, which means an effort exercised toward achievement of purpose or practice. While the literal translation of sadhana sounds mechanical, it implies a practice of a healing nature. In the tantric tradition, sadhana refers to the path of liberation. Meditating, Reiki, gardening, playing basketball, singing, and yoga are all examples of sadhana that could lead to deep levels of healing with the correct intention- that is, when a person engages in these activities with the purpose of reconnecting to their inherent power.”

The next 40-day global sadhana

Yesterday, I received the email introducing Spirit Voyage‘s next 40-day Global Sadhana, led by Snatam Kaur and Sopurkh Singh. If you watch the video above, they expound on what this global sadhana will entail.

It will begin on February 6 and continue through March 16, and it will center on releasing fear and becoming a conscious leader.

Once again, I’m in! Sounds like just what the (Divine) doctor ordered.

Saucha = Purity

As 2012 has begun, I’ve been making an effort to re-commit to my observance of Ahimsa. For several days, though, I have been feeling much more connected to a niyama– Saucha. Saucha is usually translated as “purity.”

I was reading through an article at the beginning of this week that stated that the New Year is a time for ‘purification rituals.’ I’m not sure how broadly applicable that is, but I love the idea of it anyway. I know, for me, it rings true. Perhaps if the holidays are a time of excess, the New Year is a time to re-balance, purify and simplify. The New Year is like pulling out a fresh, clean sheet of paper on which each of us will write the “2012” chapter of our lives.

There are so many convergences happening right now that I’ve been drawn to an intensified observance of Saucha in the past few days. Firstly, we are still in this window of pure potentiality, known as the window of direct creation. This will continue until 1.23.

Also, on Monday 1.9, the 40-day Global Sadhana honoring the Divine Feminine will be drawing to a close, and I will be beginning a 21-day yoga challenge– transitioning back into a more rigorous asana practice again.

And let’s not forget that the first full moon of 2012 will be on Monday, as well. I usually give a little shout-out to the full moon with some type of clearing or purification practice- I sage, I re-charge my crystals, I go to a full moon sound healing ceremony with crystal bowls from time to time.

With all of these factors combining to produce such powerful energy, I’ve been prioritizing clearing, cleansing, letting go- putting down any excess baggage that no longer serves me. My house is getting the Saucha treatment currently. I’m finally purging all of the excess that came here when we moved in last year. Let me tell you… it feels great. I’ve been re-organizing and re-arranging, practicing a little Feng Shui to remove any blockages and help the energy (Chi) flow more freely. I feel better already.

As I was reflecting on the changes I’m making and experiencing, I realized that details are awesome and wonderful. But it is the “purification rituals” themselves that hold the most power. No matter what form or aspect the “purification” takes, the results are the same in some way- like saying ‘I love you‘ in 15 different languages. If the intention is pure and true, it will transport you to the same place in the end.

If you haven’t tried any “purification rituals” recently (whatever that means to you), maybe give it a try and see if you experience the same thing. Has anyone else been focusing on clearing and cleansing this New Year? If so, whatcha doin’?

So what is Sadhana?

I’ve been writing a lot lately about the Global Sadhana I’m participating in. This is a wonderful illumination about the importance of Sadhana by Yogi Bhajan.

I love the part about cold showers… not sure if I’m on board for that today. Baby steps.

Yoga help for the holidays

I. Love. Synchronicity.

I’m preparing my class for tomorrow. It’s my birthday, and I get to teach. It’s a gift that I couldn’t have imagined receiving just one year ago. It was about this time one year ago that I sat down and made a list of intentions for the coming year. I wrote them down, said my prayers, and watched things fall into place in such a miraculous way. High on the list… finally get certified to teach yoga. And here I am, one year later, preparing the class I will teach on my birthday.

In gratitude for this wonderful blessing, I wanted to put together a class that honors where I am in my life today while also honoring my students and the spirit of this special season.

We are now 6 days into the 40-day Global Sadhana honoring the Divine Feminine. I am loving connecting with the energy this global community is generating. Each day, I am doing my humble part by finding ways to honor and connect with Mother Earth.

It has been such a powerful practice for me that I wanted to bring that energy into my class this week. The root chakra (muladhara) seemed like a logical place to start. It is the center of physical experience, and its element is earth (its associated shape is the square, which represents the Earth itself).

And then… voilà! This article not only details kundalini practices for developing the root chakra, but also addresses the importance of balancing muladhara during the holiday season.

Thank you, Shakti! Thank you, Ma! I can’t wait to see you at all of my celebrations this year! ♥

Intervention is divine

I haven’t had television in my home for many, many years now (unless I was living in someone else’s home…gypsy roots). Occasionally, though, I’ll find myself in front of a TV and a show will really get my attention. One of those is a show called ‘Intervention’ about addicts and the loved ones who are trying to get them help to change their lives.

It’s generally dark and intense, but what I find most intriguing about it is that ray of hope- the prospect for change. Will they say yes? Will they let go of low vibrational behaviors and activities? Will they begin an upward spiral? Through their actions, the subjects are crying out for help… but will they take it?

I suppose I had ‘Intervention’ on my brain yesterday because it was the first of the month (a day that I usually check in with myself and set intentions for the month) and also because it was the first day of the 40-day Global Sadhana honoring the Divine Feminine. Everything about the Sadhana screams YES! to me. In fact, it was one of those areas that I felt that the Divine was winking at me and saying, “Here you go. Here’s what you’ve been looking for. Here’s what to do next.”

But would I accept the help that is being offered? It was after 10pm on the first day, and I hadn’t found time for the daily observances. I was tired. It had been a long day. Excuses, excuses, excuses. Blah, blah, blah. The truth was that I had let myself be carried through the day on the momentum of the habits and rituals that are really, honestly not working for me anymore.

I chose yesterday’s daily reminder specifically for the first day of Global Sadhana to remind myself what the commitment really means (and maybe, possibly because I could foresee myself talking my way out of it). It is a commitment to raise the vibration of our planet and to embrace my own highest vibration for the good of all. I say YES! to that. Drop everything else. Clear my schedule. The Goddess herself has sent me an invite. I’m there!

We are fast approaching that time of year again- the big first day- when we make our resolutions and welcome a new beginning. But what if, this time, we didn’t think of it as an event that will come and go? What if, this time, the commitments that we make to ourselves and each other are the commitments that we keep in every moment- with our words, with our thoughts, with our actions? What if we make every moment a New Year’s Day where we reaffirm our commitment to be the highest and best version of ourselves?

The Divine speaks to us everywhere and through everything. Even the most challenging “problems” are opportunities to learn, grow, and evolve. But the first step is always opening our hearts and accepting that help is here. It reminds me of the story of the man and the lottery ticket:

There is a man who’s always been poor, and one day he decides to pray to God that he could win the lotto. He prays and prays, but doesn’t win. Every day, he prays to God that he could win the lotto, and it never happens.

One day, when he’s very old and frustrated, he gets on his knees and says, “Look, God. This is the last time I’m going to pray. PLEASE let me win the lotto, or at least tell me why you aren’t letting me win.”

Suddenly, an angel appears before the man and says, “Look, sir, could you do God a favor and at least BUY A LOTTO TICKET?!”

So…what’s your answer?
